I am Jack’s wheezing gasp of air
Well, that’s it, my first quarter of college is officially over. English was technically done last Thursday, I took my Psych final on Monday, and my Math final on Wednesday. The classes were ok; English was my favorite, Psych was relatively boring, and Math was intensely frustrating. At least once per week I came very close to walking out of that class and never going back. The phrase “F this, I’d rather work a crappy job for the rest of my life than feel this way” crossed my mind a lot, and I’ve never been so close to quitting something.
Strangely enough, math was my favorite homework. It was logical and finite; I’d start a problem, work through it, and get an answer. As difficult as math was for me it was the most rewarding. English homework was fine, and I did learn a lot, but I never got the sense of being “done” with a paper. I never wanted to turn anything in, thinking that there was always more tweaking I could do. Psych homework was just monotonous, consisting of reading and defining a weekly list of key terms and concepts.
As far as professors, my english prof was the best. Very nice lady, very invested and passionate about her job. My math prof was also nice, reminding me a lot of Jonathan Winters. My psych professor, however, was a complete toolbox. I think he was mentally past retirement and didn’t seem to care as much as the other professors. Our weekly assignment, as mentioned before, was to read and define a list of terms in our own words. I’d seen him grade assignments for 15 students in 6 minutes, so it didn’t appear that he was actually reading the work that we’d done. The following week, I copied the definitions directly from the book and turned it in. Sure enough, full credit.
At any rate, I got an A in Psych (which I’m assuming everybody did), and an A- in English (one of two A’s in the class). My Math grade hasn’t been posted yet, and I’m pretty nervous. Through the quarter I maintained a 98% on my homework but my quiz and test scores were simply abysmal. I did very well on the last in-class test, but I don’t know if it was enough to raise the average. I think I did pretty well on the final; if I got every question correct that I think I did, it should in the 80-88% range. That score, combined with my homework average, should get me the C- I need to move on to the next math level. If not, I’ll have to repeat this class. I should know by early next week.
That’s all I have time for today. We’re going to Lake Chelan this weekend with friends and family and I have to get a-crackin’.
