Kimberly and I went to the screening of “One Six Right: The Romance of Flying” last night at the Metro Cinema. Writer/director Brian Terwilliger was there to talk with us before the film and answer questions after, which was pretty groovy. The night opened with a teaser/trailer for MS Flight Sim X, Brian talked a bit more, then we watched the film. Well, we actually experienced the film. It was shot on Panasonic HD cameras, mastered in HD on a Mac G5, and displayed via a Sony SXRD 4K HD projector. It was, without question, the best picture I’ve ever seen. Ever. It was simply stunning.
The movie itself was, of course, wonderful. The combination of planes from different eras, interviews with pilots and aviation bigwigs, the history of aviation and Van Nuys Airport, and stories of the mass-closures of small airports across the country all combined to make a very touching and thought-provoking documentary. I know it sounds about as much fun as a documentary about NASCAR or toilet manufacturing, but do see it. It really will surprise you.
If you’re even remotely interested in aviation, head over to www.onesixright.com and check out some of the sample videos. The images under “Downloads” are also worth a look. If you’ve never been interested in aviation, this film may change that. To that end, I’ll be hosting many unofficial screenings of the HD-DVD when it’s available later this year. ![]()
